Wind Farm Design
Project Overview
As part of a capstone for a wind turbine design class, I was tasked to design a mobile wind turbine farm for deployment in emergency response teams. This introduced both a specific energy and transportation challenge in the design of the turbine geometry.
I designed all parameters including height, number of blades, blade and rotor geometry, and base shape to optimize the performance of the turbine using MATLAB and Microsoft Office tools.
Mobility Considerations
To meet the mobile deployment requirement, the design of the turbine also needed to be fully collapsible, easy to assemble, and able to fit in standard shipping containers.
These needs were met and verified using SOLIDWORKS approximations of the full turbine assembly.
Environmental and Economic Considerations
This wind farm design also considered and accounted for affects of variable wind direction and wake effects from other turbines within the wind farm. Turbines were arranged in such a manner to eliminate and mitigate the impact of wake affect on total energy production.
Furthermore, both noise and cost impacts were also calculated, mitigated, and reassessed in the design.
